Peakjet is modernising its booking platform for Premium Smart Travel

Company

PeakJet is the consumer-facing brand of PeakPlus AG, a Swiss «Mobility Platform». Following a Mobility-as-a-Service model, PeakPlus sells individual seats on private jets, bridging the gap between exclusive charter and crowded commercial business class. The model is asset-light – PeakPlus operates no aircraft of its own, but acts as a technology and distribution platform connecting passengers with certified operators (AOC holders), focusing on routes from Switzerland to European destinations. At its core is a highly customised booking platform that maps the specific requirements of the aviation industry – from dynamic pricing and product information management to API-driven distribution.

Objective

The challenge: modernising a powerful, forward-looking platform for market launch

How do you bring a highly complex, custom-built booking platform up to modern technical standards – without losing its unique modularity and without putting the premium brand promise at risk?

  • Technology evolution: The platform was originally developed as an MVP using the VirtoCommerce and frontend technologies available at the time. Given the rapid pace of technology change, the next step was to bring the stack up to current standards while retaining the core concept of an open, modular e-commerce architecture.

  • Preserving unique modularity: Every component of the journey – the flight itself, a specific seat type, ancillary services such as meals or baggage, and combined fare bundles – is treated as a distinct «product». This platform strength had to be fully preserved throughout the technical modernization.

  • Delivering the premium experience: The customer-facing frontend had to live up to the expectations of a demanding premium audience – intuitive, elegant and fast.

  • A foundation for operations and growth: Dynamic pricing, PIM and the API-driven distribution (PeakConnect) needed to rest on a scalable, maintainable foundation capable of supporting future use cases.

Implementation

The solution: modernisation in clear phases – a clean foundation, a headless frontend, long-term operations

Together with PeakPlus, mühlemann+popp is modernising the platform in clearly defined phases: from a stable backend and a modern frontend to build & operations from a single source.

  • A clean technical foundation: Upgrade of the core engine from VirtoCommerce v2 to v3 and migration of the custom backend modules to .NET 8 – for performance, security and long-term maintainability. Set up on a new, clean PeakPlus GitHub organisation and a parallel Azure test environment.

  • Evolving the architecture: Directly forked VirtoCommerce standard modules are resolved, custom business logic is moved into clean extension modules and repositories are clearly renamed. This keeps future standard updates from VirtoCommerce seamless to apply.

  • A two-phase frontend strategy: First a tightly time-boxed «quick win» – a dependency upgrade of the existing storefront to obtain a stable, secure interface for testing the new backend quickly. Then the actual rebuild as a modern single-page application with a new design.

  • Headless architecture with an experience API: The new SPA communicates with the backend via a GraphQL API. Decoupling frontend and backend enables faster development, greater flexibility and a markedly more responsive, smoother user experience.

  • Quality and DevOps: The CI/CD pipelines based on GitHub Actions are extended with mandatory quality gates – SonarCloud for code quality and security, and Snyk for dependency scanning.

Client Feedback

Daniel Friedli

Chief Digital Officer

«Our platform was conceived differently from traditional airline technology from the outset: open, modular and built on e-commerce principles. As technology evolved rapidly, we needed to modernise the stack without losing that core strength. mühlemann+popp helped us move the platform onto a modern foundation while preserving its flexibility. We now have a strong base for continued product development and a partner who can support us from new features through ongoing operations.»
